Event Details

This event is the 5th of our Saturday Series and the Moray & Nairn Schools League for 2017. It's for everyone. Non members are welcome to take part.

Before you come, get into the mood by watching one of the features with Mike Bushell on BBC Breakfast on Saturday morning. This item tells you more: https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/3764

We've had a fairly encouraging number of entries (138) by the Wednesday evenbing deadline before we went to print with the maps. As always, we've allowed for a few spares, based on previous event attendance, to cater for anyone who missed the pre-entry survey, so please turn up even if you're not pre-registered.

On 17th June 1967, 50 years ago to the day,  the British Orienteering Federation was formed, making orienteering an official sport in the UK. We're celebrating this by having a 1960s theme. It's entirely optional, but if you've been around in the sport a while, this is your greatest excuse ever to dig out your oldest and shabbiest o kit! If you'd rather come as a Jimi Hendrix lookalike or arrive in style in your flower power VW Beetle the choice is yours. Or if you just want to come as you are and help us celebrate 50 years of this wonderful sport, be our guests. It will be a fun day.

Directions

Follow the brown road signs to Culbin Forest via Kintessack from the A96. The event will be signed from the village of Kintessack.

Parking

Forestry Car Park at Wellhill, near Kintessack (payment of FCS parking charge is competitor's responsibility). Please park considerately as there will be a lot of orienteering traffic in addition to the usual public use of the carpark and forest.

Nearest Toilets

Provided by Forestry Commission in the Car Park

Safety Information

  • All Competitors take part at their own risk and a choose a course that matches their experience and fitness.
  • Everyone is timed, but you don't have to race it if you don't want to be competitive. The only thing we ask is that you report back to the downoad area by the course closing time so we know you're back safely (1300 for Yellow and Orange, 1330 for Green)
  • Please be courteous to other forest users. This is a busy forest and competitors are likely to encounter walkers, dogs and cyclists. There may also be people on horses so please take care not to scare them as this may endanger the rider and animal.

Start and Finish Information

Registration and the start are adjacent to the main Wellhill carpark with the finish only 150m away.

Courses available:

Terrain Description

Lovely runnable sand-dune forest with intricate terrain for the harder course, and lots of paths for the easier courses

Courses (Colours and Lengths)

Yellow course = 2.3km (Easy - Perfect for the young ones)
Orange course = 3.5km (Moderate - Junior improvers and adult beginners)

Green course = 5.1km. (Hard)

For those wishing to challenge their orienteering skills without running for this distance, there is the option of cutting out one part of the course to make it a Short Green of 2.9km

Yellow and Orange courses will close at 1300 per the usual Saturday Series timings, but to allow competitors sufficient time to complete the Green course, this will remain open until 1330s.

(For those still stuck in the 1960s Yellow = 11.43 furlongs, Orange =  17.39, Green = 25.34)

Map Details

Scale 1:7,500 with contour interval 2.5m

There has been some significant growth of some undergrowth since the courses were planned. This may mean that some smaller paths are more indistinct. The planner has made every effort to clear undergrowth which may interfere with necessary routes on the shorter courses but runners on the technical courses should be aware of the possibility when making route choices.

OTHER GENERAL EVENT INFO

Schools League Info

Anyone attending School in Moray or Nairn is automatically entered in to the Schools League competition. Remember to give the name of your school on your entry form. The best 4 competitors from each school count for the team.

Schools League competitors can run on any course (higher points can be gained by gaining a clear round on the harder courses). Secondary and primary pupils will be scored separately. See the 'Leagues' menu for full schools competition information.

Please register as an individual, but you're welcome to run as a pair. Shadowing by parents is allowed on the Yellow course. For groups of 3 or more running together, only 2 individual times can count for your school team score.  You can see the full rules and information HERE.

Press and Photography

Previews and post-event reports for all our events appear in the local press. We often take photos at events that may be used in the press, but will not name anyone under 18 without parental consent. You can see previous press reports in our press album on Facebook.

Information for parents "shadowing" junior runners

Adults shadowing juniors only need pay for the junior entry. Please allow your son/daughter to do most of the navigation themselves. If you are doing all the navigation for them (ie they're chasing you round the course), please let us know at registration so we can note you down as "non competitive" or register you as an adult to make it fair for those who are competing.

We encourage adult "shadowers" to help out if you see your children going obviously, wrong or getting stuck, but please wait for them to ask you for help before stepping in. That's all part of the learning process and helps build their self-confidence. This also makes it fair for the children that do the course all by themselves. Thank you.
