Buckie Event - Thank You

Phil and helpers

Just like to say thank you very much for organising the Saturday League Event at Buckie.

It is great going too and orienteering on new areas like Buckie.  The area, though not technically challenging was interesting and well worth running on.  Shame about the vandalism of control no 10, though I did find it interesting down at the bottom of that sandstone river gorge trying to find the lost control!

Well done, I hope we can find more new places like that.

Voided legs

Agree with Chirs - it was really well organised - well done Phill (helped by Tim and Eddie)! It was a good challenge for us on the computing team to work out how to remove the voided legs. We got there in the end by inserting a fictitious No 42 for everyone who was affected by the missing the control. This ensured that the computer didn't show anyone as disqualified. Then we found a menu option that allowed us to remove the two affected legs. If you look at the splits for those runners who missed no 42, the times for no 10 won't make sense and that's because the 'leg time' we inserted was totally random.

It was a great shame that there was no take-up from the Buckie area primaries, especially after the taster morning we put on 2 weeks ago. However, it was great to see Eden Brown, a 16-year old from Buckie High and a very capable cross-country runner enjoying her first experience of orienteering. Hopefully Eden and her mum will tell her mates what they missed!

Thanks Chris/Mike. It was a

Thanks Chris/Mike.

It was a shame about control 10 and that so few newcomers turned up but people seamed to enjoy the day , and I certainly did as it is many years since I organised /planned an O event.

It is difficult to establish orienteering in a new area like Buckie, and although there was a lot of advertising/promotion in the local schools this was difficult to translate into attendance outwith school hours. The area is not technically difficult  and a bit limited but it is a map that can hopefully be used by the local schools.

cheers

Phill
