This event to be held at Sanquhar Woods is the 7th of our Saturday Series and the 8th Moray & Nairn Schools League event for 2016.  The area has regularly been used by the club for orienteering for small events like this. Though restricted at times due to its size and shape it is still hugely popular with orienteers providing a good and enjoyable challenge.  The competition area is a blend of urban and mixed woodland interspersed with a large network of footpaths and trails.   General terrain is undulating; steep in parts, contouring can be subtle in places.  There are numerous water features around Sanquhar which include two large ponds and the Mosset Burn. All courses will run in close proximity to these water features.  Vegetation is rather mixed but does have some good runnable forest, however; there are areas of bracken and some low lying vegetation such as brambles which may impede your running at times. The use of the footpaths will always provide good alternative route choice should it be required.

Please be aware that the woodland is also very popular with other users.  The area is quite often frequented with dog walkers and mountain bikers. Some footpaths can be very indistinct and seasonal. The woodland has some purpose-built mountain biking trails, all courses should avoid these.

Remember – All courses will close at 13.00. All controls will then be collected in, you must return directly and promptly to the finish for download.

All courses will cross a small urban road which will be marshalled. Any instructions given by a marshal or event official must be obeyed for your safety. The Yellow and Orange courses will additionally follow and use a small section of footpath within a housing estate, there is no significant road crossing and it will not be marshalled.

All parents/carers who have juniors competing at Sanquhar must satisfy themselves that their children and perhaps you have the necessary ability and skills to safely run the courses within the terrain as described above.  Yellow competitors your course map will be available for collection at registration to inspect before your run.

Schools League Info

Anyone attending School in Moray or Nairn is automatically entered in to the Schools League competiton. Remember to give the name of your school on your entry form. The best 4 competitors from each school count for the teams.

Schools League competitors can run on any of the 3 courses, but secondary and primary pupils will be scored separately. See the 'Leagues' menu for schools competition information.

Please register as an individual, but you're welcome to run with a friend and help each other out as you go. For groups of 3 or more running together, only 2 individual times can count for your school team score. This is to make it fair for the majority of more experienced juniors who do the course on their own or as pairs. It's the best 4 times that count for the Schools League - you can see the full rules and information HERE.

Previews and post-event reports for all our events appear in the local press. We often take photos at events that may be used in the press, but will not name anyone under 18 without parental consent. You can see previous press reports in our press album on Facebook.

Information for parents "shadowing" junior runners

Adults shadowing juniors only need pay for the junior entry. Please allow your son/daughter to do most of the navigation themselves. If you are doing all the navigation for them (ie they're chasing you round the course), please let us know at registration so we can note you down as "non competitive" or register you as an adult.

We encourage adult "shadowers" to help out if you see your children going obviously, wrong or getting stuck, but please wait for them to ask you for help before stepping in. That's all part of the learning process and helps build their self-confidence. This also makes it fair for the children that do the course all by themselves. Thank you.
