IMPORTANT STOP PRESS (16/9/16) There have been reports of wasps at large in Roseisle. The planning team placing controls today were unmolested but their dog got stung near one of the furthest-away controls on the Light Green course. If you have an allergy to wasp stings, please take appropriate precautions and consider not running if your allergy is serious. The start team will be briefed to advise all runners accordingly.

NOT-SO-IMPORTANT OLD STOP PRESS (13/9/16) - THIS EVENT LOOKS SET TO BE THE BIGGEST ATTENDANCE, BY SOME DISTANCE, THAT WE'VE EVER HAD AT A SATURDAY SERIES EVENT. DUE TO THE UNPRECEDENTED NUMBER OF PRE-REGISTRATIONS WE ARE PUTTING IN PLACE TWO SPECIAL MEASURES THAT WILL ALLOW US TO COPE WITH REGISTERING 200+ PEOPLE IN THE SPACE OF AN HOUR. THIS INCLUDES AN EARLY REGISTRATION PERIOD FOR MORAVIAN MEMBERS ONLY AND NO DOWNLOADS (FOR ANYONE) UNTIL 1120.

PLEASE KEEP A SENSE OF HUMOUR WHILE WE DO OUR BEST TO COPE!

This event is the 7th of our Saturday League and the 8th in the Moray & Nairn Schools League for 2016.

Burghead Primary School are hosting us with the Parent Council laying on home bakes etc and teas/coffees..

194 people have already told us they're intending coming. Please see further down the page for course information.

Maps have already been printed based on the entry on 14th Sept and we have hired in extra EMIT brikkes due to the very large entry. If you forgot to pre-register, we'd still like you to inform us of your intention to come by clicking HERE. It does help us be better prepared.

Parking

Please park considerately on local roads.

Registration and Assembly

Registration, download and assembly is in the main hall at Burghead Primary School. The club banner will be outside the school to point the way. Although main registration starts at 1015, Moravian members are encouraged to arrive early to register from 0945. The school will open at 0900; the entrance is round the back (on Dunbar Street). For navigationally-challenged Satnav users, the postcode of the school is IV30 5UQ.

Map

The Light Green and Orange courses use a 1:7,500 map (1 cm = 75 metres) with 2.5 metre contour interval.

The Yellow and White Courses use a 1:5,000 map (1 cm = 50 metres).

Both are printed on waterproof A4 paper. Control descriptions are printed on all maps and there will also be separate loose control descriptions for the Light Green and Orange courses, available in the pre-start area.

The terrain was resurveyed in spring 2016 by Donald Grassie with very recent updates specifically for this event by Mike Rodgers

Course lengths etc can be found further down the page.

Map Legend

There is not enough room on the maps to include a legend, but if you're unfamiliar with orienteering map symbols you'll be able to pick up a separate map legend from registration free of charge.

Start and Finish

The start and finish are close to each other in the playing field by the Bowling Club approx 200 metres East of the school. Please take care crossing the road on the way to the start and on your way back to download.

Registration

Please complete a registration slip on arrival. Children who attend school in Moray or Nairnshire please remember to include your school on the form. To save time at the event, you can download a registration slip via the link on our web site (left hand side of the home page) and bring it with you on the day. Moravian members please arrive early for registration if you can.

Downloads

After you've finished your course, please return to the school to obtain your split times printout. To allow the entries team to focus on getting all competitors in to the event data base, there will be no dowload until 1120. If you arrive back before that, please relax and enjoy the refreshments provided by the school until we announce that downloads can start.

Prize Giving

There are no formal prizes but there's a fun competiton for who can get the fastest sprint finish on each course. Under 18s only are eligible on the White, Yellow and Orange. So no matter how bad your run there's a chance to redeem yourself on the run-in from the final control!

We'll try and combine this with the junior badge presentation to Moravian junior members who have achieved Scottish Orienteering badges recently. Winners have already been contacted separately by Morag our badge administrator.

Event Safety

Everyone must report to download after their run, even if you do not complete the course. Courses close at 13.00 at which time controls will be collected in. If we think you are still out in the woods by this time a search party will come looking for you.

Advice for first-timers
Don't be fooled by the apparently short distances. The courses are measured in a straight line; you might end up running considerably more. Adult beginners are recommended to do the Orange course, or if you're not feeling confident about your map reading, try the Yellow. If you find it too easy, and think you might enjoy the challenge of more technical navigation running, you can run a harder course next time.  Primary-school beginners should start with White, although we do have lots of Under 12s regularly running Yellow, and some doing Orange. Secondary-school ages should start at Yellow.

Schools League Info

Anyone attending School in Moray or Nairn is automatically entered in to the Schools League competiton. Remember to give the name of your school on your entry form. The best 4 competitors from each school count for the teams.

Schools League competitors can run on any course, but secondary and primary pupils will be scored separately. The harder coiurse you do, the more points you can score, bur ONLY if you achieve a clear round. See the 'Leagues' menu for more detail about schools competition.

NB - Please register as an individual, but you're welcome to run with a friend and help each other out as you go. There's no point 3 or more running together, as only 2 individual times will count for your school team score.  It's the best 4 times that count for the Schools League - you can see the full rules and information HERE.

Press and Photography

Previews and post-event reports for all our events appear in the local press. We often take photos at events that may be used in the press, but will not name anyone under 18 without parental consent. You can see previous press reports in our press album on Facebook.

Information for parents "shadowing" junior runners

Adults shadowing juniors only need pay for the junior entry. Please allow your son/daughter to do most of the navigation themselves. If you are doing all the navigation for them (ie they're chasing you round the course), please let us know at registration so we can note you down as "non competitive" or register you as an adult.

We encourage adult "shadowers" to help out if you see your children going obviously, wrong or getting stuck, but please wait for them to ask you for help before stepping in. That's all part of the learning process and helps build their self-confidence. This also makes it fair for the children that do the course all by themselves. Thank you.
